aThis course is reserved for those taking a Summercourse with Dr. Harkin.Are you interested in monsters? Things that go bumpin the night? Why there are so many movies, books,and TV shows on zombies and vampires? The Anthropology ofMonsters will look at scientific evidence for theexistence of monsters and why humans have alwaysimagined them. This course will examine the phenomenonof cultural belief in various sorts of monsters from a widevariety of standpoints, drawing on scientific perspectivessuch as biological anthropology and archaeology, rangingto humanistic perspectives such as literary theory andfolklore, with the largest portion of the course deveotedto cultural anthropological analysis. Students will thusgain a broad overview of anthropology as a four-fielddiscipline and will gain skills in accessing, evaluating,and analyzing various data.
