Fall 2020 Film Dir: Black Horror Film (ENGL-4070-80)

"This course surveys the work of Spike Lee, Ryan Coogler, Ava DuVernay, John Singleton, and Jordan Peele through the lens of constitutive rhetoric and rhetorical listening. We will interrogate how living in a highly segregated state such as Wyoming influences our perceptions of race and racism, and how listening carefully to these filmmakers can keep us from falling into the trap of believing that racism is a thing of the past because “we don’t see it.” Finally, we will explore how “not seeing” is inextricably linked to refusing to see, and how this selective not-seeing provides space for institutional racism to perpetuate violence."
